Over the last year and a bit, Middlesborough boy Paul Bowen has steered the Luna label from strength to strength. Originally a spin off from his renowned Riff Raff night in the city, Luna has grown in its own right through 2010 delivering some sterling music from the likes of Chris Lattner, Dan Drastic, Matthias Tanzman, So Inagawa, Bearweasel & Justin Drake plus of course Paul Bowen himself.
Bowen’s debut release ‘Black Matter’ in the summer of 2010 was extremely well received, gaining critical acclaim from press and DJ support from the likes of Seth Troxler, Agnes, Ed Davenport & Solomun. Now he steps up with the latest chapter in his musical excursion, the ‘New Beginning EP’.
The release kicks off with ‘Excel’, a tight and rolling slice of deep, tech edged house built around taut drums and a simple yet infectious riff. The original is closely followed with a remix of the said same track by the excellent Chris Lattner. Berlin based Lattner is now stranger to the Luna label have previously provided both original work and remixes for the imprint. For his mix of ‘Excel’ he turns in a subtle and hypnotic version that is a perfect compliment to the original.
The third slice of the pie comes in the shape of ‘Busta’, a wonderfully understated piece of house music that builds layers of percussion on top of deep muted bass to provide a mesmerizing, underground opus. The final piece in the puzzle is title track ‘New Beginning’ which continues in the vein of deep, dubby house, using key stabs, sub heavy bass and simple percussion to build a perfect conclusion to the excellent EP.
If this is anything to go by, Paul Bowen and his Luna Records imprint are set a great 2011…
Paul Bowen’s ‘New Beginning EP’ is released on Luna Records in March 2011.
